BEAUTIFUL WIN FOR THEATRE STAR AMY

- JEMMA RYAN

GEELONG stage star Amy Lehpamer has been recognised as one of the best in the business, taking home a top honour at the Helpmann Awards.

The former Sacred Heart College student won Best Female Support in a Musical for her portrayal of songwriter Cynthia Weil in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

The awards — Australia’s answer to the Tony Awards — recognise distinguished artistic talent in live performances.

It was the first win for Lehpamer who had previously been nominated for her roles as Maria in The Sound Of Music and Dusty Springfield in Dusty.

She took to social media to share the news yesterday.

“Funnily enough, today marks 10 years since my professional debut … I’m a big old sentimental dork for markers like that, and it is honestly so humbling and wonderful that this glorious land of musical theatre has been my world for this last decade,” she said.

“I’m so, so thankful to have been a part of ( Beautiful). It boasts the most generous, present and talent-filled collection of humans … It made the show a joy for me, and is the reason it’s been loved wherever it goes.”

After an acclaimed run in Sydney earlier this year, Beautiful has toured the country to huge success and claimed three gongs on night one of the theatre industry’s premier awards on Sunday — the second half of which was held last night.

Lehpamer has been cast in the role of Principal Rosalie Mullins in School of Rock The Musical, which opens in Melbourne in October.
