WEATHER SPIN-OUT
STRONG winds, possible thunderstorms and hail are on course for Geelong today, but it’s not deterring local frisbee players.
Geelong Disc Golf Club president Andrew Ferguson has the skills and the equipment to cut through any gust, although the 90 to 100km/h bursts predicted as part of a Severe Weather Warning could test even the bravest players.
Possible thunderstorms with potential hail are also forecast and those threats might be the only phenomenon to spoil the fun.
“Of course unless it’s unsafe — it would be more the threat of lightning that will keep people away — you can definitely use the wind to your advantage,” Mr Ferguson said. “Generally we’ve got quite stable discs that will fight a headwind and hopefully fly the way we want them to.
“A golf disc is engineered differently so you can throw it a fair distance, but with a regular frisbee you might find in the shop, it’s not going to be fun at all.
“But if you’ve got the right equipment, it’s happy days.”
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michael Efron said conditions could turn nasty in Geelong from around midday, when the ‘feels like’ temperature could drop to around 5C, although those praying for rain will be once again disappointed with only 1-2mm forecast.
“Very windy conditions are expected across the state on Tuesday, and that’s a result of a cold front approaching the west of the state during the morning and progressing rapidly across Victoria into the evening,” he said.
“We will see northerly winds strengthen in the morning and I think they’ll be strongest for the Geelong region around midday and into the afternoon.
“The most likely areas in the region to see those gusts will be towards Avalon and also the Bellarine Peninsula and towards the Otways.
“There is a chance of hail on the south west coast, but only a slim chance for Geelong.”
Geelong Disc Golf Club welcomes all newcomers to try the sport on the first Saturday of each month at Barwon Valley Fun Park.
