CATS MUST LEARN TO HANDLE PRESSURE

-

THERE is plenty of conjecture and theories as to why Geelong can get it all together at the right time, like Richmond last year and the Bulldogs in the previous year, to put themselves into contention for a long overdue Premiership.

Well, here is my theory, to add to the pile.

The Cats will fail dismally this year, despite the inclusion of Gary Ablett and our star-studded midfield unless they can achieve one stat.

Unfortunately, that stat is to either handle pressure and inflict hard tackling pressure on the opposition ball carriers.

In coach Chris Scott’s career, he hasn’t taught his team to implement this key point.

Time and again, over the past few years, we have seen a repeat performance, where the Cats go to water under intense pressure. Sydney did it to us in finals, as did Richmond. Lately, the Bulldogs dished it out as did the Crows this past week.

Geelong should forget about all other scenarios, other than train intently on running in numbers, tackling hard and playing as a team.

Shepherd when required, play smart, instead of handballing under pressure to a teammate about to get tackled in numbers, or bombing it in long and in hope. Time is running out for Scott. Perhaps it’s time for Matt Scarlett, with Corey Enright as his assistant, to meld the side into a fierce one that everyone is scared to play.

Anyone can beat Geelong these days, no matter if they are down the ladder or not, they know if they bring the pressure, Geelong will fold. That is not a recipe for finals success.

I hope I am way off the mark and Geelong can prove me wrong. I’d love nothing more than a flag in 2018. Robert Lymer, Belmont
