Injuries mar victory

-

IT was not pretty but it was another win all the same for the in-form Geelong Cougars.

Still, the 66-49 win over the Peninsula Waves in the VNL Championship division came at a cost, with injuries to Tori Honner and Mel Bragg.

Honner suffered what looked like a knee injury in the first minute of the third quarter.

This, coupled with a minor injury that forced Bragg off the court, saw a flurry of changes to the Cougars lineup.

The Peninsula Waves went on a nine-goal run, helped by the accurate shooting of Waves’ Rhani Samason.

But the Cougars restored order in the final quarter.

The attacking play settled and the feeds into Ruby Horton were flawless, as the team dashed to a 22-8 final quarter. THE Cougars’ Division 1 side had a strong win over Peninsula Waves 63-45, celebrating Hannah Ken- nedy’s 100th game with the club.

Kennedy became only the third player to achieve the milestone.

A strong 17-8 first term set up the convincing win.

The pressure through the midcourt was a highlight of the game.

Accurate shooting from Hannah Van Gemst, with support from Simone Hickman and Elle Rice, steered the Cougars to an 18-goal win. IN the 19/under, Ruby Barkmeyer’s brilliant goaling display powered the Cougars’ 19/under team to an eightgoal win over Waves.

Marked as a must-win game, the team came out firing. But it was the third quarter, though, where it set up the win.

Ruby Pekin-Schlicht was able to create a defensive barrier through the centre court.

Coach Mel Savage said: “We redeemed ourselves after the last performance against the Waves. It was a very consistent four-quarter performance.”
