Suns hot to keep Swallow

- JON RALPH

GOLD Coast is adamant David Swallow will serve out his contract despite catching the interest of West Australian clubs wanting to lure him home.

Swallow becomes a free agent next year, one of a long list of players who are out of contract at the end of 2019.

It was reported yesterday Fremantle had interest in the 25-year-old given his explosive midfield play.

If West Coast loses Andrew Gaff to a Victorian club, it could see Swallow as an experienced replacement in the right age bracket this year.

But the Suns have made clear he is going nowhere, keen to retain experience given the impending departure of Tom Lynch.

Swallow is one of a number of players loyal to the Suns who will have to assess their options when their free agency rights come up.

Lynch seems increasingly likely to find his way to Richmond, with Collingwood’s odds of securing him lengthening by the week.

The Magpies have other priorities that include retention of Darcy Moore.

Hawthorn is a contender, but it has consistently said it would not pay a single player $1 million a season.

The biggest question mark about Lynch’s future is the condition of his knee, having on Tuesday had surgery to reconstruct his PCL.

He has endured two injuryplagued seasons, but before that was seen as the game’s most exciting key forward.

The Suns will demand an answer from Lynch about his future when he returns from knee surgery next week.

Co-captain Steven May was also equivocal about his future, stopping short of devoting himself to the club’s future.

The senior core is out of contract in 2019, including May, Sam Day, Rory Thompson, Tom Nicholls and Alex Sexton.

Exciting forward Peter Wright, midfield talents Jack Martin and Touk Miller as well as Pearce Hanley and Callum Ah Chee are also out of contract next year.
