BOOK CLUB HOPES TO SPARK READING LOVE

- JACOB GRAMS

AUSTRALIA’S children have a new free book club.

Kidsnews.com.au this week launched the Kids News Book Club to encourage children to read and to inspire a love of storytelling.

The club, in partnership with HarperCollins, has kicked off with five great titles aimed at students from years 3 to 8. They are: His Name was Walter by Emily Rodda; Ice Wolves by Amie Kaufman; Barney and the Secret of the French Spies by Jackie French; Funny Kid Prank Wars by Matt Stanton; and The Girl, and the Dog and the Writer in Rome by Katrina Nannestad.

Each month, Kids News will add a new book with the first three chapters available free to read. THE weather bureau insists Geelong is in the midst of typical winter weather despite a series of cold fronts necessitating multiple severe weather warnings during the past week.

Victorians have been battered by strong northerly winds, notably hitting its peak last week with thunderstorms causing building damage around the city.

Parts of the Surf Coast felt the effects yesterday, including sheets of metal being ripped off a roof in Apollo Bay and a tree falling on a shed and bringing down a power line in Ocean Grove even before the worst of the winds struck widespread areas into the evening.

All students will also have the chance to win a class set of the book for their school.

Kids who sign up for free membership (which requires parental consent) can buy the books at a discount price, said the latest front would be passing through the state today on a mostly cloudy day with the potential for the odd shower.

“We’ve had quite a lot of wind in the last week or so with a series of cold fronts last week and that’s set to continue with another cold front on the way from the west,” he said. “It’s fairly typical for winter and particularly July. I guess the only unusual thing is we’ve had so many cold fronts in the space of one week.”

The strongest gusts recorded yesterday included 80km/h at Cape Otway at 3.30am and a 72km/h gust around 7am.

Avalon Airport hit 67km/h just after 1pm and a weather station at Sheoaks, north of Geelong, hit 74km/h at 12.08pm. enter competitions and win cool stuff.

Non-members can purchase books, too, but without the members’ discount.

Kids News publisher Toni Hetherington said creating a free book club for young readers across Australia enhanced the literacy benefits kidsnews.com.au was already bringing to schools.
