Juniors are having a ball

Geelong Soccer Club’s girls benefit from equipment, training boost

- ALEX OATES

IT’S fair to say the girls from Geelong Soccer Club have got the ball on a string.

With 50 “touch training balls” in their grasp, courtesy of the VicHealth Active Club Grant, the budding junior players are able to hone their craft off the pitch.

And co-junior co-ordinator Marina Krasic said the equip- ment boost was invaluable for the club.

“We are located in Corio, we do have a lot of kids from Northern Bay College and children with refugee status, so this is fantastic for them,” Krasic said.

“We’ve got such a diverse club, so to give those girls an opportunity is something we’re very proud of.”

The club will also venture indoors, while the coaches of the under-7, under-9, under-11 and under-14 teams have access to professional coaching.

“The grant involves three parts and one of those was the extra balls, which allows the girls to get some extra practice by taking it home and have a kick and a play,” Krasic said.

“The second part of the grant was being able to hire indoor soccer facilities around Geelong and the third part of the grant is being able to pro- vide more coaching and training for female coaches.

“We’ve got a couple of female coaches and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback about females coaching the young girls through the ranks.”
