Thieves snatch crown jewels from cathedral

-

CROWN jewels belonging to the Swedish royal family were stolen in a daring 007-style heist by thieves who escaped on a motorboat.

Two crowns worn by Karl IX and Queen Kristina, as well as a royal orb, were taken from the 13th century Strangnas Cathedral.

“One of my friends saw two people running,” a witness told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

“I saw the boat was there, a white little boat with a motor on the back. Two men hurriedly jumped on board and it sped off.”

The witness, who was not named, described it as a “despicable” robbery.

“I knew immediately that they were burglars because of the way they were behaving. And I told the girls to call the police,” he said.

“The fact that the boat was waiting it was obvious to me that they were burglars.”

The artefacts are goldplated and adorned in precious stones and pearls though their exact value is unknown, The Sun reports. Police spokesman Thomas Agnevik said: “It’s too difficult to translate these things into some kind of value … It’s such a unique object.”

He said the thieves would have had to break the glass the jewels were kept behind, which would have set off the church alarm.

Witnesses told Aftonbladet how they were enjoying lunch on a fine day when they saw men running from the cathedral in all directions.

Tourist Tom Roswell said he saw the gang jump into a little white boat and race off into Lake Malaren, one of the largest in the country.

Mr Agnevik said: “We are looking for a small and open motorboat. We have some different information about how exactly the boat looked. We are now examining all the tips we receive.

“By boat you can reach Mälaren, Köping or Arboga in the west, or Västerås, Eskilstuna or Stockholm if you drive east. We direct our search in all these directions.”

He said it would be difficult for the thieves to sell the very recognisable items on the black market.

“But if they are pros, we may not get the items back or find whoever did this,” Mr Agnevik said.

The stolen goods had been buried with Karl IX since the 1600s but were later exhumed and put on display.
