Caddie warns of a fiery Tiger attack
HIGH-PROFILE caddie Steve Williams says it is “just a matter of time” before his former boss Tiger Woods is back where he belongs — winning golf tournaments.
Williams is in Fiji this week caddying for Australian young gun Dimi Papadatos at the Fiji International at Natadola Bay.
The New Zealander carried Woods’ bag for most of his 14 majors while he also caddied for Greg Norman, Raymond Floyd and Adam Scott in a stellar 40year career.
Woods showed more than a few glimpses of his old self when he was in contention deep into the final round at the British Open Championship at Carnoustie last month.
Williams said getting so close to victory in a major would stoke the fire in Woods, who has battled physical and personal issues after dominating the sport.
“He’s amazingly resilient, what he’s been through to bounce back,” Williams said.
“When you’ve got that much talent and much desire, and his work ethic is beyond anybody else’s that plays the game … he’s going to have success.”
“He does not go out to play merely to make a number in the field.
“I know by his way of thinking and his way of operating, if he is playing in a golf tournament, he truly believes he can win it. He won’t go in underprepared. It’s just a matter of time before he gets a victory … it will come.
“When he gets close and it doesn’t happen, that just makes that burning desire even greater.’’
Williams said Woods was always “hellbent” on winning majors and catching Jack Nicklaus’ mark of 18 major titles.
