Lorne golfer breaks four-year open tournament drought

-

LORNE golfer Simon Trickey ended a four-year open tournament drought with victory at Inverleigh on Saturday.

The local golf gun, who last tasted success at Ocean Grove in 2014, shot a fourover 75 to lift the perpetual Briody Trophy ahead of Dave Foster and Glen Styles.

“I got off to a bogey, birdie start. There were a few bogeys and birdies going through,” Trickey said. “At the turn I was one-over after my first nine. Then I came home with a couple of bogeys, finishing with four-over for the day.

“I played with three good mates of mine, so we had a really good day. It was enjoyable and nice to win.

“It’s been four years since the last one, so it’s been a while. It was just nice to get the job done.

“I hit the ball pretty steady and that was good enough.”

Trickey was full of praise for the way Inverleigh had turned out its course for the club’s showpiece day.

“The course was in really good condition. It was as good as I’ve seen Inverleigh,” he said.

“There was plenty of grass and there’s been a lot of work done out there with the new drainage and things.

“The scrapes were a lot drier than the ambrose two weeks beforehand.”

Trickey admitted he hadn’t been playing as much golf as he used to in recent years, but was “slowly getting back into it”. “I’m going to try and play a few (opens). I don’t exactly know which ones, it depends on work and if I’m free,” he said.
