Rogue driver who ‘doesn’t get the message’ locked up again

- RUSTY WOODGER

A SERIAL driving offender who police say continues to “thumb his nose” at the law has been jailed.

Blake Wilson was yesterday sentenced to four months behind bars after he was nabbed driving unlicensed two days in a row.

The jail term is the ninth for the 25-year-old, with all previous stints also coming as a result of driving unlicensed or disqualified.

Wilson, who has never held a licence, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court to drug driving and two counts of unlicensed driving.

The former Norlane man was first picked up on April 15 when he drove through a police drug and alcohol testing site in Newcomb.

Despite testing positive to methamphetamine — and being charged for unlicensed driving — Wilson was back behind the wheel barely 24 hours later.

Shortly before midnight on April 16, police intercepted Wilson driving on Settlement Rd in Belmont, where he was once again charged with unlicensed driving.

The court heard yesterday Wilson had been convicted 17 times for driving matters since 2012. He had also breached a range of court-issued orders since 2013, it was told.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Geoff Lamb said a strong message needed to be sent. “He just thumbs his nose at the law,” he said.

“Prison and corrections orders haven’t deterred him.

“He just doesn’t get the message. It’s as simple as that.”

Wilson’s lawyer said the high school dropout had battled ice addiction since he was 19, but had been abstinent since starting a new relationship in May.

“For the first time in his life — since his mid-teens — things are going well for him,” the lawyer said.

But magistrate Ann McGarvie sided with the prosecution and said he had been given ample opportunity to address his behaviour.

On top of the jail term, Ms McGarvie banned Wilson from driving for two years.
