Jail best message for teen

- RUSTY WOODGER

A BELL Park teen faces a nervous wait as police push for a “significant” jail term for his dangerous driving.

Jacob Callick appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday where he entered guilty pleas for drug dealing and his role in a high-speed pursuit through Geelong.

Early on May 16, a drug-affected Callick drove at up to 120km/h in a 50 zone as he fled along Shannon Ave, Newtown.

Despite a passenger not wearing a seatbelt, the 18-yearold continued speeding on the wrong side of the road and through a red light before crashing near Balyang Sanctuary.

When police arrived, they found the car on its roof resting in trees, and Callick and his passenger requesting help.

They were taken to hospital and later charged with trafficking ice, after 4.29g of the drug was found in the car.

Callick was on bail at the time after he was caught dealing ice in November, when police pulled him over while driving through Whittington.

The court heard he had been battling a daily ice habit since he was 14 and that he was prepared to start a clean life after three months in custody.

But prosecutor Senior Constable Geoff Lamb said a “significant” jail term was warranted.

“There needs to be a deterrence. Prison is the only way people will get the message,” Sen-Constable Lamb said.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie deferred sentencing to Monday for Callick to be assessed for a corrections order.
