Mackay happy to get on with job
ADELAIDE midfielder David Mackay knows he is one of them: an AFL whipping boy.
Mackay has come to terms with being the type of player who cops criticism from his own club’s fans no matter his feats.
How does he cope? By blocking it out.
“It’s such a passionate footy state, it is everywhere, so it’s difficult at times,” he said yesterday before his 200th AFL match this weekend.
“But it’s one of those things you learn with experience as time goes on, that you can’t take on too much of the negativity.
“You have got a job: to play. And that is really what you have to do.
“I don’t really follow much of the media . . . and I really enjoy being oblivious to that sort of stuff because it works both ways.
“When things are going really well you can become a bit complacent about the important things that matter.

really well or you’re having a period where you’re not going so well, I have found it’s been really beneficial to block things out.”
The 30-year-old, recruited to Adelaide in the 2006 national draft, said he hoped to sign a fresh contract with the Crows for next season.
“I certainly feel like there is more that I want to contribute and achieve, and I certainly have the drive to keep going,” he said.
“We’re in discussions with the club at the moment, that is probably something that will play out in the near future.”
