Geelong West cops the full Jonty show

- RYAN REYNOLDS

SOUTH Barwon forward Jonty Broughton got the ultimate reward for his workrate in his team’s clinical win over Geelong West.

Broughton kicked nine goals, eight of them after halftime, to more than double the Giants’ score on his own in the Swans’ 100-point win.

The talented forward ignited South Barwon — who had led by just four points at half-time — by kicking the first three goals of the third term.

“He had a really good day. It was a reward for effort, his forward pressure was up and he was playing with a fair bit of energy,” South Barwon coach David Farrell said after the 18.17 (125) to 3.7 (25) victory.

“He was able to capitalise on a few opportunities, which was great. We had plenty of entries in the first half but weren’t able to capitalise on it. We changed the way we structured up a little bit and he got on the end of it.

“(There were) more opportunities and more space created for him up forward.”

With the game in the bank during the third term, South Barwon rested a couple of sore bodies. The victory is a crucial one for South Barwon, with the Swans sitting inside the top five on percentage. They now face what is likely to be a do-or-die clash with sixth- placed Bell Park.

Farrell said both Reece Woods and Brandon Verfurth were rested when the margin had blown out, but neither had any serious injury concerns.

In slippery conditions, inand-under ball-winners Ollie Lee and Ryan Dillon were named alongside Broughton as South Barwon’s best.

“He (Dillon) has been enormous. He is hugely important to us and he is starting to get some recognition,” Farrell said.

“(Dillon and Lee) seem to feed off each other and they are spreading the load between them and Reece Woods.”

Elsewhere, the GFL failed to throw up any surprises.

LARA matched it with Leopold for a quarter before the premiership favourite blew it out of the water on the way to a 114-point win.

Sam Boyd kicked six goals to be Leopold’s best player.

COLAC held St Albans goalless until the final quarter, running away to a 136-point win at home.

The Tigers were never in trouble with 12 players all contributing to their 23 goals.

NORTH Shore led at quarter-time, but couldn’t build on its lead in the 50point loss to Grovedale.

Mitch Van Den Burg kicked two goals to be the Seagull’s best, while Nathan Dean was crucial for the Tigers.
