Coach plays down new worrying trend

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

ANOTHER half-hour lapse and another loss for Geelong Amateur.

On paper, it looks like a worrying trend, but co-coach Jarrod Young played down concerns that poor quarters are becoming the norm.

Modewarre led by four points at three-quarter time before Mitch Day booted an early goal in the final term to regain the lead.

But the Warriors were dominant in the last 25 minutes, kicking the last five goals unanswered to win by 30 points.

The poor quarter follows an eight-goals-to-one third term against Queenscliff two weeks ago and a 30-10 point final quarter against Barwon Heads the game prior.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a trend,” Young said.

“Modda played some really good footy today and for three quarters we matched it, but late they kicked a couple and we couldn’t stop it. It was really even at three-quarter time. They kicked a couple of late ones in the third and that probably hurt us — we probably should have been a little further up — but the message at threequarter time was simple.

“The game was on the line and we had to put the body on the line and we could have easily scored up the other end but, to their credit, they played really, really good footy.”

Brad King and Blake Sutterby were the best of an even bunch for Ammos on Saturday, while captain Daniel Lovick played well in his second game back from injury.

Ammos has qualified for its sixth-straight finals campaign, but will play in its first elimination final when it meets Queenscliff on Sunday.

“We don’t have the double chance, which will be a bit of a different road for us, but if we can bring our best footy on the day, we think we can beat anyone,” Young said.

“Barwon Heads is probably a length ahead of everyone else at the moment, but the other four remaining teams on their day, anyone can beat anyone.”
