LIANE’S LEGACY SEW, SEW REWARDING

-

A BELLARINE Peninsula community group has banded together to raise money for breast cancer research in honour of a departed friend.

The Bellarine Quilters recently hosted a “La De Dah” morning tea in honour of friend and former club president Liane Jonus, who died from breast cancer 18 months ago.

The quilting and craft group raised almost $1300, donating the money to the Andrew Love Cancer centre on Friday.

President Lesley WardDavies said the women were “gobsmacked” at the amount they had been able to donate.

“It was such a success that the ladies decided that we want to do it every year,” Mrs WardDavies said. “The amount of money we raised in three short weeks — we were gobsmacked.

“The support and love the ladies show each other, there is nothing like it.”

The Bellarine Quilters also used the morning tea as a chance to donate 20 quilts and 38 beanie and mitten sets to the Southern Cross Kids Camp — a charity that works to help disadvantaged children.

Mrs Ward-Davies said they had donated about 100 quilts to Bethany, a charity that helps families in volatile situations.

“Most people at some time need a helping hand, to be able to give directly to the people who need help, it’s an amazing feeling,” she said.
