Holiday ‘bromance’ important for blokes

- JEREMY PIERCE

FELLAS, there has never been a better reason to go away with the boys.

A study has found Aussie blokes are not spending enough time together and men should take a “bromantic” holiday to keep their friendships alive.

While the study was commissioned by liquor company Wild Turkey to promote Spirit of the Wild, a blokes-only camping retreat, the science is sound, according to relationships expert Emily Chadbourne.

“Most of us are happiest when we’re spending time in social situations,” Ms Chabourne said. “Men traditionally aren’t as open to talking about their emotions, which is why it’s important for them to get together with their mates regularly.

“Lack of ‘bloke time’ leads to a feeling of disconnect hence the current decline in mateship.”

The research found 48 per cent of Aussie men had lost touch with mates as modern lives and commitments made it harder to keep the bromance alive.

About 40 per cent of survey respondents said they were too time-poor to see their mates, while a further 42 per cent blame workloads.

However, almost three quarters (73 per cent) of blokes still have a desire to reconnect by getting away from it all for a boys’ trip.

Intrepid traveller Tyson Mayr, who is also known as The Naked Traveller, said it was important for blokes to get together, either for a weekend camping or fishing or an extended vacation.

“Mateship is all about weekends away in the bush, sitting by the campfire, drink in hand, chatting with my closest mates,” Mr Mayr said.

“It’s important for me to stay true to getting out in the wilderness with nothing but the outdoors and the good company of mates.”
