Drunk footballer crashes car

- OLIVIA SHYING

A BOOZY football night turned into a nightmare for Lara’s Brayden Cotter when he crashed his car into a fence.

Cotter had spent the night of September 16 last year celebrating the end of the footy season with his mates at North Geelong Football club.

The Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday Cotter had consumed multiple alcoholic drinks at the football club when the group decided to party on in the Geelong CBD.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Jackie Davis said Cotter did not drive to the CBD and had left his car in the footy club carpark — but when it was time to go home he changed his mind.

In the early hours of September 17 Cotter drove his black Holden Captiva from the carpark along Shell Rd toward Lara.

About 4.40am he drove through an intersection, veered off the road and hit a fence and tree. Police arrived at the scene and Cotter admitted to driving the car.

Officers also found a vial of testosterone on the passenger’s seat, which Cotter said was his.

Cotter was taken to the Geelong hospital for medical treatment and gave a blood sample at 7am revealing a blood alcohol concentration of 0.173.

Representing himself in court Cotter, who pleaded guilty to drink driving, told the court he knew his actions were wrong and that he had paid the price for him stupidity.

“I could’ve killed myself or someone else and I haven’t driven for 11 months,” he said.

Magistrate Peter Mellas disqualified Cotter from driving for 17 months and ordered him to pay a fine of $750.
