Warriors ward off Roos

- ALEX OATES

MODEWARRE co-coach John Meesen says recent success against minor premier Barwon Heads will give his side supreme confidence as it bids for a second grand final berth in three years.

The Warriors stormed into the second semi-final, shaking off a dogged Anglesea after three quarters to win by 25 points at Leopold Memorial Park on Saturday. The victory opens the door for a drought-breaking premiership, while condemning

the ’Seas nine goals to three to secure a stirring win.

After playing a key role against Geelong Amateur last week, Morgan Fenton played another starring role, while Troy Anderson and Daniel Sturzaker again proved their worth to the Warriors.

Barwon Heads now awaits, with a grand final berth on the line.

“They finished on top for a reason and they’ve been the best side throughout 18 rounds,” Meesen said of the Seagulls. “When we played them in Round 17 on our home deck it was a bit of a slog. Next week it’s going to be a fast deck and it will be a highly entertaining game of BFL footy. Both teams move the ball well and both teams have speed and good ball users in their side, so I feel like it's going to be a good game.

“We feel like we’ve got some good match-ups for some of their key players.

“We took a lot of belief out of that Round 17 win, but having said that, they were three games clear on top and it’s hard to gauge how much they were getting out of that game and we needed to win to make finals. “We’ll rest up, recover and be up for the contest next week.”

Modewarre will be strengthened by the return of Mitch Fisher, who was rested for the qualifying final with soreness.
