Creative spaces to renew Geelong
THE first central Geelong shops to be reactivated as a space for creatives under the Renew Geelong project will be opened this week.
Two adjoining Market Square shops fronting Moorabool St will be launched as The Renew Concept Space on Thursday.
The Geelong Illustrators, a collective of Geelong region artists, and Boe, which repurposes old products, are among the initial intake at the Concept Space, which also offers an exhibition area, a workshop space and room for temporary users.
Renew Australia announced Market Square and Up Property, the owner of the Belcher Arcade in Moorabool St, as the first two property partners for the project.
The Belcher Arcade, which is destined for redevelopment, is expected to be activated within a month with Renew Geelong having a diverse range of applicants able to take up the opportunity for up to five innovative businesses or projects.
Renew Geelong is supported by the State Government and the Geelong council, with Geelong MP Christine Couzens saying the project would bring new life and energy to the city.
“I encourage more property owners to get onboard — and encourage Geelong’s creative community to take advantage of these opportunities,” Ms Couzens said.
Market Square’s assistant centre manager, Lurline Lett, said the centre was working hard to lead the way in corporate social responsibility.
“By supporting emerging artists and performers, charities and community groups, we give back to the community that gives to us,” Ms Lett said.
Property owners and agents are encouraged to contact Renew Geelong if they are interested in the activation of vacant commercial properties.
