Labor a good sport with funding pledge

- JAIMEE WILKENS

SPORTING clubs along the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula are basking in a preelection cash splash as the State Government gears up for a November election battle.

The Andrews Government has committed $5 million towards stage two of the Drysdale Sports Precinct project if re-elected later this year.

This follows the $3.5 million completion of stage one works in early 2018, which saw the construction of a new oval, a multipurpose field, cricket practice pitches, a relocatable pavilion and lighting installation.

Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said an additional $50,000 would go towards fast-tracking the planning phase for stage two works.

“The community has been unsuccessful in getting this critical money from council,” she said. “This will ensure there are no delays in delivering stage two.”

Stage two will see the completion of three rectangular playing fields located alongside a new multi-use pavilion, play spaces and cricket training nets, water storage and improvements to the access roads, carpark and pathways.

Anglesea Football Netball Club is looking forward to a brighter future with $100,000 pledged to upgrade the existing sports lighting at Ellimatta Reserve.

The funding has been allocated as part of the Country Football and Netball Program.

Western Victoria MP Gayle Tierney thanked the Surf Coast Shire and Anglesea club for the “hard work” they had put towards securing funding for the project.

“The Anglesea Football Netball Club is a thriving institution, and its players deserve the best facilities,” she said.

“This boost will go a long way to helping the club cater for the growing numbers of people keen to get involved in grassroots sport, providing more opportunities for locals to get active.”
