Joeys turn attention to flag race

- ALEX OATES GFL

THE search for St Joseph’s next senior coach could continue into late September as the club focuses on its premiership defence.

Joeys football manager Peter Haintz said the club would likely wait until the end of the season to announce a replacement for Heath Jamieson to avoid disrupting their push for back-to-back flags.

“We advertised last Saturday, so we have to give that a few weeks for people to put a resume together and then we’ll go through the interview process,” Haintz said.

“So we’re at least a month away . . . and that’s right in the heart of our finals series. So do we want to interrupt that? Probably not.”

While reluctant to discuss the strength of applicants, he said “there’s certainly interest” in the top job.

A five-man selection panel has been assembled to find the next mentor.

“We’ve had a couple of meetings and we’re open to all suggestions,” Haintz said.

“We have a list management team and we’re looking at our list and seeing where we’re at as a club. I have to give ‘Jammo’ a lot of credit that we’ve been pretty successful in his six-year era and he’s leaving the club in a sound on-field position.

“We’re competing in another finals series. We only lost a couple of players last year, and there’s always surprises, but we’d like to think that we’d keep the majority of our players.

“So we’re certainly open to whoever wishes to come along and present, and see what they believe they can add as senior coach.”
