GALAXY’S STEELY FOCUS

- RYAN REYNOLDS

GALAXY United coach Kat Smith is confident her team won’t get caught up in the various scenarios that can unfold in the WNPL top four race.

United sits five points outside the finals positions with three matches remaining and is within reaching distance of Alamein FC.

The race has the potential to go down to the final round of the season.

Galaxy plays cellar dweller Southern United on Sunday and follows that up with a fixture against struggling Senior NTC the following week.

Alamein plays powerhouse South Melbourne and third-placed Bulleen Lions.

It means Galaxy could potentially be inside the top four with one round to play.

However, Smith said her squad wouldn’t get ahead of itself and was instead focused on getting the job done against Southern United at Monterey Reserve.

“The focus is on us and making sure we do the business against Southern, NTC and Bayside in the next three games,” Smith said.

“At the end of the day we can’t control or have any impact on the results between Alamein and their opponents. All that we can do is focus on ourselves and do the job right on the day.” If Alamein can somehow get a point against either South Melbourne or Bulleen, then goal difference could be vital. Alamein sits 20 goals ahead of Galaxy on that table, making clean sheets and plenty of goals scored crucial for the Torquaybased side over the next two rounds. Defender Jess Tay will play a big role in Galaxy keeping a clean sheet. “She’s a formidable defender, rock solid there in the back,” Smith said. “She is that glue within the squad, off the park as well. She is a leader.” Smith said it was also crucial Galaxy made the most of the times in the match when it is on top. Assistant coach Rob Casha and his backroom staff will coach the Galaxy this weekend, with Smith away on Young Matildas duty.
