FINALS GLORY AT LARA
ST MARY’S forward Herschelle Carr booted a matchwinning six goals to lead his team to a 38-point under-15 Division 1 grand final win over Newtown & Chilwell.
Carr was the Saints’ leading goalkicker, after last week tying for the under-15’s Division 1 best in competition award with Joel Edwards from St Joseph’s Podbury.
The grand final was one of 16 finals played at Lara over the weekend, with an estimated 5000 people turning out to watch the youngsters in action.
Highlights included a close victory for the South Barwon Blue under-13 side, coming back from five points down at threequarter-time to defeat Barwon Heads Gulls by a point.
There were plenty of eyes on St Joseph’s Podbury as they took out the under-17 grand final, defeating St Mary’s Digby by 10 points.
Jack Mullen and Max Lindrea were the leading goal scorers with two majors each.
St Mary’s had earlier robbed St Joseph’s of a perfect season in a Round 7 clash.
AFL Barwon boss Lee Hartman said the weekend delivered “a great celebration of junior footy”, with the facilities at Lara providing the perfect backdrop.
Hartman said the multiple ovals on offer at Lara meant spectators were treated to an outstanding display of junior football.
He said all participating clubs deserved to be proud of the way their players and supporters had conducted themselves over the weekend.
