’Seas plot revenge
Coach says team has learned from loss
ANGLESEA coach Paul Carson says the lessons from the qualifying final loss to Modewarre will hold his side in good stead when the teams renew hostilities on Saturday.
Booking its place in the preliminary final with a gutsy 17point win over Geelong Amateur, Carson is confident Anglesea can make amends for a disappointing showing 10 days ago.
Modewarre is also smarting after a lacklustre performance against Barwon Heads, which powered through to its first grand final in 25 years with a 63-point victory.
“Barwon Heads are such a slick unit and it was hard to work out whether ‘Modda’ were a little bit off or Heads were just too good . . . a little bit of both, perhaps?” Carson said.
“But I’m really pleased that we get another go at Modewarre. We think we can (get them).
“I think we learnt a lot and the boys will take a lot out of the game last week when we were down for 15 minutes and lost by three or four goals.
“The competition is so tight and 15 or 20 minutes of good or bad footy could make or break you. It’s still the case.”
Regarded as the most likely side to challenge Barwon Heads for the premiership, Modewarre was flat in Saturday’s second semi-final.
The Warriors were beaten up around the ball and had no answer for the class of Mitch Herbison, who ran rampant with six goals.
But Carson knows Modewarre will respond.
“I think they’re a really good transition side, so they can turn their defence into offence really, really quickly,” he said.
“They’re a skilful side and they possess the ball well. If we can break that down, it will help us win the game. We’ll come up with a plan to try to do that, but they’re a very good footy team and they will take some beating.”
The ’Seas hit the water off Portarlington immediately after the match on Sunday and Carson said they would take a different approach to training.
“Obviously it’s a short week now, so we’ll do a bit of recovery and train lightly on Tuesday and try to keep Thursday night as normal as possible to freshen up and be ready for Saturday,” he said.
“We’ll be ready.”
