NEW DAD SHINES WITH SEVEN GOALS

- GOALS: Inverleigh — Bell Post Hill — BEST: Inverleigh — Bell Post Hill — ALEX TIGANI

IF you thought Simon Seddon looked electric on the GDFL’s best defender on Saturday, then wait until you understand the significance of his lead-up to the game.

“I’ve been in hospital all week,” he said casually, as he zipped up his club jacket postmatch.

The 29-year-old added to his reputation as the GDFL’s No. 1 player with a stunning sevengoal performance against Bell Post Hill.

But few were aware he had just become a father three days earlier.

“Kodi was our first child and he came Wednesday around lunchtime and we finally got home yesterday,” Seddon said.

“There wasn’t much sleep before the game either, so I’m ready to head back now.”

After an impressive set shot in the opening term, the first-year Hawk kicked his second goal less than a minute into the second term, before his third helped guide his side to a 30-point lead at the main break.

Then came the third term — a 20-minute highlights reel that may prove to be the catalyst for a drought-breaking Hawks premiership in 12 days’ time.

Seddon kicked four goals on the league’s premier defender, Cameron Addie, with each major seemingly more surreal than the other.

“The boys just kept feeding me the ball and a bit of luck fell my way — there was nothing else to it,” he said.

He finished with 7.2 before finishing with 26 disposals and nine marks in a best-on-ground performance.

Yet all he could think about was his prize at home.

“We named his middle name after my father, Paul, because our little guy was born on August 29 and that was the 10th anniversary of my dad’s death,” he said.

“We kind of find it was a bit freaky, but it was surreal, and as to whether or not (wife) Melissa wants to bring him on grand final day, it’s up to her because she’s been an absolute trooper.”

Seddon has already climbed up the senior premiership dais with Koroit (Hampden FL) and Kyabram (GVFL) and once kicked 10 goals in the second half of a QAFL grand final.
