GALAXY STILL ALIVE AND KICKING

GEELONG GALAXY 3 SENIOR NTC 0

- ALEX OATES

GEELONG Galaxy’s season has a pulse again after they thrashed Senior NTC to remain in the finals mix.

Galaxy closed within two points of fourth-placed Alamein with a clinical 3-0 victory at Banyul Warri Reserve on Saturday.

Adriana Taranto slotted Galaxy’s first on 11 minutes, while Laura Spiranovic netted a brace (49 and 80th minutes) to see their side home.

“It was a good performance overall,” coach Kat Smith said. “We needed to make some changes due to some injuries and the unavailability of players, so to be able to score goals and keep a clean sheet was pleasing.

“It’s a bit late, but better than never, that we’ve been able to find some goal-scoring form that keeps us in the hunt for finals.

“We just need to get the job done against Bayside next week and hope some other teams that play against Alamein do us a favour.”

With one round remaining before finals, Galaxy must win its Round 28 fixture against Bayside and rely on Alamein losing its final two games.

“The big game is Alamein and Bulleen,” Smith said.

“It’s back to two points now, but if Alamein picks up three points on (tonight), then the difference will go back out to five. We’ll know pretty quickly if we’re still in it or not. Myself and a few of the girls will go and check out that game and we’ll be barracking for Bulleen.

“The following week Alamein have Box Hill and we’re hoping for a repeat performance after Box Hill was able to win 4-2 in their most recent game a couple of weeks ago.”

With a finals berth unlikely, Smith said, “we’ve only got ourselves to blame”.

“You never want to be in this position, relying on other results,” she said. “We can look back on the fixture and say there were some crucial results where we didn’t get the points, and . . . there were a few results against teams who were far off the pace and we should’ve been able to take care of business back then.

“You live and learn.”
