Works set for station carpark

- SHANE FOWLES

WORKS to create hundreds of new carparking spaces at South Geelong Station will begin tomorrow.

Rail passengers have been warned they are unable to park in the unsealed area near Swanston St during construction.

People are urged to instead drive to Marshall Station or park nearby at Richmond Oval or Kardinia Park.

There has been no timeline released for the works, which will create 200 new spaces.

Following public feedback, new security measures are also being introduced.

“Lighting and CCTV will be installed in the new carpark to meet industry standards and ensure the safety of all patrons,” VicTrack said.

A public call to create an additional entry and exit point onto Swanston St was consid- ered but “did not meet the required road safety standards”.

“However, we have included pedestrian access through to Swanston St in the designs,” VicTrack said.

Signage linking the site to the Bellarine Rail Trail is also being installed.

The construction will have no impact on the rail services.

The project follows an upgrade at Marshall Station, which over the past few months has built 50 new car parks.

The works are part of a statewide $22.5 million program to upgrade regional train stations, bus stops and bus interchanges. The Victorian Government program has funded new bus shelters at the Geelong Court House stop and North Shore Station.

It has also bankrolled a new shelter canopy and taxi rank shelter at Geelong Station, and new bike cage at North Geelong Station.
