Behind the scenes look at CSIRO

- OLIVIA SHYING

HOW scientists diagnose and explore diseases was the focus of a half-day CSIRO workshop aiming to encourage high school students to consider careers in varying scientific fields.

More than 20 year 10 and 11 students from Nelson Park School’s senior campus suited up in protective clothing and spent time at CSIRO’s laboratories recently.

Student Storm Allen said students learned how and why scientists treat diseases and how they work with animals during the three hour session.

“I learned there are a lot of different diseases that animals and humans can pass on,” Storm said. “We had a tour and got to see the labs.”

Principal research scientist Dr Wilna Vosloo said the school program, facilitated by the Ardoch Foundation, allowed CSIRO to promote science and STEM-based careers to students.

“We are hoping that these sessions will show that these are career choices on your doorstep, you can stay in Geelong and still do great scientific work,” she said.

Lead teacher Andrew Earls said the school’s curriculum focused on linking students to employment opportunities.

“A lot of our students from years 10-12 do work experience, this excursion added another element of exposing students to different industries,” Mr Earls said.
