Lydia’s out of survival mode

- Andy Sunderland

Smashhdown. AFTER her shock elimination from Australian Survivor, Olympian Lydia Lassila has returned home to her “happy place” in Lorne.

After initially saying no to the opportunity, the mother of two was excited by the chance to test herself in a unique situation.

“For me it was about challenging myself and what better way to do that physically, mentally and socially,” she said.

Widely considered one of the strongest competitors in the show’s history, Lassila has recently expanded her business BodyICE — manufacturing ice and heat packs for injuries — to include mental training.

“I’ve developed some visualisation tracks that people can download that teach them the mental toughness that I’ve learned as an athlete,” she said.

“People wonder how can you do it but everyone can learn it. The power of the mind is very amazing and such an untapped resource.”

Six years ago, thanks to the flexibility of running an online business, Lassila relocated to the Surf Coast.

“As a kid my dad used to camp on the foreshore and it was in the family that every weekend and holiday we would be down in Lorne and it was always my happy place,” she said.

“After having a long (ski) season and travelling all over the world the first thing I always wanted to do was go back to Lorne … so it was a pretty easy decision to move down there.

“We have built a lifestyle down there that is so wonderful.”
