Warriors to ring changes

Ammos have experience

- RYAN REYNOLDS

MODEWARRE captain Kathryn Vickers says the Warriors’ versatility will play an important part in today’s BFL netball grand final clash with Geelong Amateur.

The premier has not lost to Ammos since August last season, defeating them in last year’s grand final and in all three matches this season.

Vickers said the Warriors matched up well with Ammos, but also had the ability to change things up if they needed to find a spark.

“We have got depth and I think that’s what has favoured the top teams this year,” she said.

“Switching, for me for example, I can go from GD to GA or shooter, and we are happy to run any line-up.

“Ammos will always hit us with everything, so we can’t afford to be complacent. They’re an awesome side and they have lots of different options. “It starts from zero.” Geelong Ammos star Kate Schippers said it was crucial her side kept the game on their terms for as long as possible.

“Just to play netball how we all know how to play netball. We’ve been doing it for long enough, we all know how to do it, it’s just making sure we all do it on the day together as a team,” Schippers said.

“Last weekend ( when we beat Torquay) showed that we definitely can and hopefully that can progress into this weekend’s game.”

For some of the Ammos’ Agrade squad it is their fifth BFL grand final in a row.

Schippers said that experience would be invaluable if the game got tight.

“Finals are always nervous no matter who you are playing and what year. But that (experience) is something that’s on our side, we have played those finals games and there is a fair few of us that have done that,” she said.

“But it doesn’t make it any easier.”

Modewarre earned last week off after rolling Ammos by 11 goals in the semi-final, but the squad did not rest.

Instead the Warriors played a practice match against a group of former Victorian men’s players.

“Matt Armstrong (our coach) played mixed netball for Victoria. We got a few of the boys to have a good hit out with us on the Thursday night,” Vickers said.
