Scott not ready to rate 2018
GEELONG coach Chris Scott says he needs more time before judging the success of his team’s season after the Cats’ premiership dreams were swiftly ended by Melbourne at the MCG last night.
The Cats have recruited for the present to keep themselves in premiership contention, bringing in champion Gary Ablett in the off-season.
However, the club has been disappointing in finals since the 2011 premiership, with last night’s 29-point elimination final loss coming after two preliminary final beltings.
Scott, who was lavish in his praise for the Demons, would not buy into rating Geelong’s season when asked if he had seen it as a failure.
“I think the time for us to makes those assessments are going to come a little bit down the track. It’s not appropriate in my mind to answer that question expansively 30 minutes after our season is over,” he said.
“In short, we are always trying to improve our list while we transition.
“There’s enough room for optimism in our future.”
Geelong’s season evaporated in the first term as Melbourne shot out to a 31-point lead.
It was forced to play catchup and while the Cats had their chances, they squandered crucial shots in front of goal in the second and third terms.
Scott admitted the Cats were comprehensively beaten in “all facets of the game”.
“At times we had chances to work our way into the game but didn’t really take those chances,” he said.
“For the most part, that’s because a really good team put a lot of pressure on us
“We blew some chances that were inexplicable in our mind and gave them some opportunities that were a bit uncharacteristic of us.”
