Meeson Modda’s main man

- ALEX OATES THE BEST-ON-GROUND

JOHN Meesen had two medals around his neck, but he could only care about one of them.

“Only one medal counts, really,” said Meesen, moments after receiving the best-on-ground medallion in Saturday’s BFL grand final.

“I could not care less about the other one. To win a premiership at your home club is a dream come true.”

Meesen, a two-time premiership player for Eastern Football League powerhouse Balwyn, was monumental for Modewarre.

His tap work was elite, gifting the Warriors’ onballers silver service, despite the best efforts of Seagulls’ big man Tyson Macilwain.

“He was inspiring,” Modewarre co-coach Josh Finch added. “The thing that people soon forget, he came back to the club in 2012 and he was coming off an AFL list (Melbourne and Adelaide) after his elite career was ended and he was hanging on by one leg.

“People were pretty quick to critique him and he came back into a better standard of footy, dominated the Eastern Football League and returned to Modda to give us silver service.

“For years and years we’ve struggled (in the ruck). In 2016 we were up against Peter Street.

“We had Kieran Pearce who was six foot and competed, but you’ve got someone who comes from an elite standard, played a mountain of footy and a great standard of footy, he was a fantastic edition to the group.

“He was best on today, so well done to Meeso.”
