Ammos upset the form book
GEELONG Amateur cocoach Angus Kramer praised his players after the faststarting Ammos capped a stunning run from fifth position to claim the under-19 Division 2 premiership over Ocean Grove.
The giant-killing Ammos continued their finals momentum, piling on five goals to nil in the opening quarter and continued the pressure in the second term, holding a 26-point lead at the main break.
The Grubbers clawed their way back into the contest in the third thanks to the likes of Joseph McDonald (three goals) as the margin was cut back to three points, but the Amateurs held off the surge and claimed a deserved 11point win.
Toby Lever and Christian Davis booted three goals each for Ammos, while skipper Chris Lever was influential.
“We kicked the first five of the game and while they did come back, I think we tired them out the way they had to work and work. The way we
persisted, it was a real fourquarter effort from us,” Kramer said.
He said having a fullstrength squad, as well as the drive from previous finals wins, were crucial to the side’s premiership success.
“Momentum was huge, it was as if we played four grand finals in a row, but that momentum and the feeling of winning each one pushed us to the next level and got us all the way, which was great,” he said.
Ocean Grove ruckman Lachlan Slater was awarded best-on-ground in a losing effort and had mixed emotions after the loss.
“I’m a bit upset, but the boys got through a long hard year and we were down a bit at quarter-time, but to come back was good, unfortunately we didn’t get the win,” he said.
“I didn’t expect it (being awarded best on), it could easily have gone to someone from the winning team.”
