Election cash splash a win for Newcomb
NEWCOMB Secondary College will be given a $6 million boost by a re-elected State Government, which principal Phil Honeywell says will go towards refurbishing key learning areas.
An area for learning associated with advanced manufacturing, such as 3D printing, and other areas for maths and music could be established with the funding, Mr Honeywell said.
He said the school wanted to create an area to give students skills that would serve them in tertiary education and employment.
“We want to lead kids to be more creative and innovative in their problem solving,” Mr Honeywell said.
“(We want to have the ability) to do more things like design, cutting, printing and more advanced manufacturing-type skills rather than just traditional trades. We do have facilities for the traditional trades already.”
He said it was unclear if the school would be able to add buildings with the funding.
Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the State Government had invested about $80 million in schools in the Geelong electorate in the past three years, and more than $3.8 billion to build 70 new schools and upgrade 1300 across the state since 2014.
“No matter where you live in Victoria, every student deserves to have a great school. A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will make sure they do,” she said.
Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said: “We’ve building and upgrading more than 1300 schools across the state over the past four years and only Labor will keep delivering for Victorian families.”
The State Government has also promised $9.1 million for Bellbrae Primary School if it is re-elected, while the Opposition has pledged $8 million for the school if it wins the November election.
In the 2018-19 Budget, the State Government allocated $20.2 million to build the Armstrong Creek West Primary School, $3.9 million for design and early works of the Armstrong Creek Secondary School, $1.6 million for Highton Primary School, $1.9 million for Torquay P-6 College and $2.1 million for Barwon Valley School.
Other funding pledged included $1.3 million for Surfside Primary School, $1.5 million for Northern Bay P-12 College Wexford Campus and $1.2 million for Oberon South Primary School.
