Davis makes winning move for finals glory

- RYAN REYNOLDS

THOMSON’S Paul Davis had to make a big call at the end of 2017.

Stay at his boyhood club Portarlington, a BFL side that has had limited success and a team that he has captained, or make the switch to the Tigers and have a taste of finals football.

The GDFL premiership medal hanging around Davis’s neck is the only proof he needs to know he made the right call.

“After all the years I’ve had at Portarlington, I haven’t had many wins over the years, so to come here and play in a finals series was thrilling for me. But to walk away with something like this, words can’t describe it,” he said.

“It was (a tough decision), I’m a Port boy through and through. I’ve got brothers there, the old man is a life member and my older brother just became a life member this year.

“We have a lot of history down there, so to leave was hard but this was the target at the end of the day and we’ve done it.”

Thomson’s GDFL campaign was only Davis’s second time featuring at the pointy end of the season with the other coming during an earlier stint at Drysdale.

Despite do-or-die matches being foreign to him, he said he was not nervous heading into Sunday’s grand final.

“I stay away from social media, the papers and all that. Working in Melbourne takes your mind off things,” he said.

“I just kept relaxed. At the end of the day it’s just another game of footy but with more people and more on the line.

“I stuck true to about 2pm and the nerves started to kick in about then. Other than that it was all good.”
