Teen to face 60 charges

- OLIVIA SHYING

A CORIO teen who has been charged with 60 theft and deception offences is expected to face court next week.

Search warrants conducted at three Geelong properties led detectives to arrest the 19-year-old along with another 19-year-old from Newcomb on Wednesday, police said.

Police said the Corio teen was arrested in an unfit state and was taken to Geelong hospital under police guard.

He was released from hospital on Thursday and charged with 60 offences allegedly relating to numerous thefts from motor vehicles, burglaries, motor vehicle theft and obtaining property by deception.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said the Corio teen allegedly committed the offences over three weeks across multiple suburbs in Geelong, including Belmont, Grovedale, Fyansford, Lara and Whittington.

The Newcomb teen has been charged with 10 offences, including theft from a motor vehicle and deception charges, which police say also relate to incidents that occurred over the past three weeks.

He was granted bail on Wednesday night by a bail justice, despite police officers strongly opposing bail.

He will appear in court on a later date.

The Corio teen has been remanded in custody to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Sen-Sgt Guthrie said strong detective work from police had led to the arrests.

He said police would continue to target recidivist offenders in a bid to drive down crime in the region.

“It’s been fantastic work by members from the highvolume crime unit who have been working extremely hard,” Sen-Sgt Guthrie said.

He urged any victims of credit card fraud or theft to contact police on 5225 3100.
