ABOUT 40 kids got their fix of speed, fumes and mud as they tore around Meredith and District Motorcycle Club’s dirt tracks recently. The club holds meetings on the third Sunday of every month with kids as young as four and adults over 50 all jumping on bikes. President Peter McLaren said the club had the motto of riding not racing, allowing kids to tackle the track at their own pace. Parent Paul Turner, who rides with his kids, said the Meredith and District Motorcycle Club was an important asset to the community. It is the only motocross track in Geelong with the next closest in Bacchus Marsh.

“In the Geelong region there is nothing here. We haven’t had (another) track for three or four years,” Turner said.

“It’s predominantly a kids club but adults can ride as well.

“We have kids starting as young as four or five and going up from there.

“They absolutely love it. They love getting dirty and when they’re not riding they’re getting their boots muddy.

“It’s a real family affair, a family atmosphere. The kids can go out there and ride with mum and dad.”

The club has two tracks — a learners’ flat track for inexperienced junior riders and a main track for all riders.

The tracks operate in group sessions based on ability, so all riders can feel comfortable riding with others of similar abilities.

The tracks, which are sponsored by Road & River Motocycles, are watered when possible to keep dust down.
