Bail fail for boy, 14

Accused robber held in custody

- OLIVIA SHYING

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy who allegedly stole from vulnerable victims at knifepoint has been denied bail.

The secondary school student faced a children’s court yesterday charged with multiple counts of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and theft.

The court heard the boy allegedly followed, threatened and robbed a number of victims while armed over a threemonth period starting in July.

His bail, which had been granted three times pre- viously, was “vehemently opposed” by a police prosecutor.

A detective told the court the boy is a regular cannabis user who has displayed no remorse for the alleged crimes.

“The offences have been committed outside of school hours and when he leaves home,” the detective said.

Police allege the boy attended a bottle shop in midAugust while armed with a knife and demanded cash and alcohol from a young shop attendant and took off.

On August 31 he allegedly stole headphones from an intellectually disabled man.

A week later it’s alleged he followed a 14-year-old boy onto a Moorabool St bus, sat next to him and told the boy “he would be shot”.

The accused teen allegedly followed the victim off the bus and made him go to a nearby rail trail where he patted the victim down while armed with a knife and demanded cash.

Days later he allegedly followed a victim in a local park and said “give me your money”. Melton, is now fundraising to help realise her dream of competing internationally.

The court heard the victim gave the boy $20. The next day the boy was arrested and bailed.

In September, he allegedly attended a bottle shop and said, “Give me all the money b----” and fled the shop with cash. He was arrested by police and bailed, despite opposition.

On October 1, he allegedly asked a man for a cigarette and then threw his bike at him when the victim said he didn’t have one. He was arrested an hour later and taken into cus- tody where he allegedly spat at a custody officer.

He was granted bail on October 2 and the next day was arrested after allegedly punching a victim.

In opposing bail the prosecutor said the boy had displayed little regard for court ordered bail conditions while the boy’s alleged victims had suffered “mental anguish”.

The boy’s lawyer said his client had a stable address, was supported by his family and had complied to youth supervision orders. The magistrate denied the boy bail and remanded him in custody to reappear on October 17.
