SPORTS FESTIVAL FULL-ON FUN

- JEMMA RYAN

MORE than 30 diverse activities will be on offer at Geelong’s free Festival of Sport this weekend.

The two-day event will allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a range of activities and entertainment.

GMHBA Stadium will become a place not only for football but for golf and croquet.

Kardinia Aquatic Centre will be taken over by stand-up paddleboarders, model boat races and virtual sailing. Geelong Cats lovers will have access to history tours of the club, including some never-seen-before heritage items.

There will be a group workout with celebrity trainer Michelle Bridges and a large, high-energy zumba class. Those who prefer to roll can have a ride on a segway or make use of the skate and scoot installation.

People wanting to exercise their mind as well as their body can try their hand at the giant obstacle course.

There will be a series of workshops tomorrow, including a motivational session about building resilience by festival ambassador, Geelong Paralympian Kelly Cartwright. Other speakers include former international cricketer Belinda Clark.

There will be a giant trapeze performance delivered by CircArts and a McLaren Formula 1 car on display as well as a number of Australian sports trophies to be photographed with.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust program manager Sue Cormack said the event was created to a theme of ‘participate, spectate, educate’.

“We’ve created the most diverse program that we possibly can of people of all ages and people of all abilities,” she said.

“Everything is free and people can try over 30 different sports and activities.

“It is very exciting to have Kelly on board … She is a ‘This Girl Can’ type of woman who doesn’t seem to let things get in her way and I think she is inspiring to anyone that wants to participate in sport when it comes to not letting barriers get in the way.”
