Eat way to test success

- TAMARA McDONALD

FOOD fuels busy students studying for their VCE exams — and there are a heap of healthy options that can help you through exam period without turning to junk.

Katie Lacy, from the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University, said students about to go through the VCE exam period “should focus on looking after yourself in terms of nutrition”.

“The best foods for you in this busy period are the healthy foods that all of us should be eating every day — vegetables, fruit, grain foods (wholegrain is best), dairy or dairy alternative foods and lean meats or alternatives (including nuts),” Dr Lacy said.

“Meals are important so be sure to take time to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

And although it was tempting to use energy drinks while studying, she said students should steer clear of sugary drinks, such as energy drinks and soft drinks.

“Even low-sugar sugar-free options and aren’t great — the acid in fizzy drinks can harm your teeth,” Dr Lacy said.

“Water is the healthiest drink, so have plenty of water available.

“You can add a piece of fruit like lime, lemon or orange to add flavour.”

She also said students should avoid junk foods including chips, chocolate and lollies, “as eating too much of these can make you feel sluggish”.

“It’s better to eat healthy foods packed with the vitamins and minerals your body needs,” Dr Lacy said.
