GEELONG VOTES
Local benefits from convention centre
A FUTURE project to build the Geelong Convention Centre will be underpinned by a strong reliance on local workers under a state Labor policy.
The State Government has declared the build a “strategic project,” meaning it will be required to use 90 per cent local content when it comes to fruition.
Although the long-awaited convention centre is yet to be confirmed for Geelong, its future looks likely on the back of recent funding commitments from multiple levels of government.
Building materials and labour will be covered by the policy, along with professional services such as engineering and design.
Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford said the project had the potential to create up to 600 jobs during construction.
“By setting local content requirements for the Geelong Convention Centre, we’re ensuring local tradies, suppliers and manufacturers will have the opportunity to benefit from this landmark project,” she said.
While in Geelong yesterday, Ms Pulford also announced a $4700 grant to Geelong Animal Rescue.
The money will help the group buy customised sunsafe marquee outposts, which will be used for fundraising, public relations and community education.
“Geelong Animal Rescue is a fantastic example of the great work not-for-profit organisations are doing to improve the welfare of animals,” Ms Pulford said.
“Since its inception in 2012, its volunteers have rescued more than 1200 companion animals.”
