Cheyne buoyed by return to Supercross

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE Australian Supercross Championships — Round 3

FORMER professional motocross and supercross star Cheyne Boyd says the opportunity to race at GMHBA Stadium tomorrow night was an opportunity too good to pass up.

The former MX Nationals and Australian Supercross series runnerup doesn’t race as much as he used to but, as owner of a motocross park in Broadmeadows, Boyd still spends plenty of hours on the bike.

“I do still ride as much as I did when I was a professional, but I can’t sustain the work I need to get done plus the training and gruelling long motos,” Boyd said ahead of Round 3 of the Australian Supercross Championships.

“The reason I do Supercross is because it’s a lot cleaner, doesn’t wear out as many parts and gets more exposure with the stadiums and media getting behind it.

“I enjoy Supercross but unfortunately we only have a small little series at the end of the year and I select a few rounds.”

Boyd, who gave the Geelong track a workout on Wednesday night, returns to the stadium where he competed in 2009 and said it was the key reason for deciding to dust off the dirt bike.

“Straightaway, the stadium,” he said.

“I raced in this stadium eight or nine years ago and, being Melbourne-based, a lot of my customers will be there at the race, so to go there and do my best — it’s not a full-time career for me now, but I still feel I can do it.

“It’s my first one of the year; I raced professional for 15 years and then ended up semi-retired and had to get a real job, so I ended up opening up my own (motocross) park.

“That’s priority and I have a family, so they’re priority, and racing is just something I do for a bit of fun but I still do it at a high level.”

A full pit party outside the venue will run from 3pm to 5pm, with preshow entertainment at 5.30pm.

The premier class will compete in three nine-lap finals to determine the champion, with racing from 6pm until 9pm.

Boyd will also compete in Sydney later this Supercross series. Tomorrow, GMHBA Stadium 5pm 3.30-5pm 6-9pm
