THE bomb squad was required to detonate a suspicious object after a two-car crash in Bell Park yesterday.

The dramatic turn of events meant Thompson Road was closed and cordoned off as a precaution for several hours.

Police last night confirmed that a number of items had been seized from a Honda involved in the collision.

The 21-year-old driver of the Honda, who sustained chest injuries, was in hospital under police guard.

He had been arrested but was yet to be interviewed about 7pm.

The Bomb Response Unit earlier conducted safety checks on the car and had safely detonated one item, police said.

Police spokeswoman Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean said the crash occurred near the corner of Armstrong St about 11am.

“It is believed a blue Honda sedan was travelling south on Thompson Road and collided with a Hyundai sedan,” Leading Senior Constable Dean said.

“A female passenger in the Hyundai has also been taken to hospital with non lifethreatening injuries.”

It is understood a passenger door of the Hyundai was removed so firefighters could extricate the woman, aged in her 50s.

Ambulance Victoria said she was taken to hospital in a stable condition with injuries to her shoulder and arm.

Police investigations are continuing.
