Nothing discreet about this win

- RYAN REYNOLDS

A SIGNIFICANT drop in grade propelled highly-rated mare Truly Discreet to a comfortable victory at Geelong yesterday.

The Dan O’Sullivan-trained four-yearold competed at Group 2 company last start but dropped back to benchmark 78 grade and was way too good, saluting by a length.

The victory qualifies Truly Discreet for the $200,000 Melbourne Cup Country Series Final at Flemington on Oaks Day.

“You could say she was badly placed last time but I believe she is up to that level (Group 2) if everything goes right,” O’Sullivan said after yesterday’s $50,000 contest.

“We decided to come back and go to the country series. Hopefully we can go to the race on Oaks Day and she will be competitive there.

“Those races are always hard to win and it’s just nice to have something that’s competitive this year. We will go straight there and all going well we still have the Summoned Stakes at Sandown if it falls into place for her too.

“She won with the authority (today) that I hoped to see her do.”

Mick Sell-trained galloper Penny To Sell also finished off the race strongly to run second.

Jockey Luke Currie got Truly Discreet into the perfect position from barrier 10 at the 1500m start, sitting one-out and oneback. She proved too classy in the straight, galloping away to live up to her $3.30 favourite tag.

“It looked her race to lose, didn’t it?” Currie said. “She was always going to be pretty hard to beat today, she looked really well. I rode her first-up and I thought she was going well and I couldn’t ride her last time, but third-up she was brilliant today.

“She is pretty push button I was happy to take it up (the running) early if those others didn’t want to go. The speed was on ... she always travelled like the winner.”
