THIS EVENT’S SET TO LURE THE KIDS
A FISHING clinic at Deakin tomorrow is designed to introduce more kids to the outdoor sport.
Rainbow trout have been added to Boyd’s Waters — a lake at the Waurn Ponds university — for the four-hour clinic, where kids will be taught the skill set to catch fish.
John Hotchin, secretary of the Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs, said the day was generally very popular.
“We’ll supply some bait and if they haven’t good rods, we’ll supply some rods but not an enormous amount,” Hotchin said.
“We’ll assist them to set up and help them catch fish.
“If they’re interested, they’ll get some addresses of the clubs closest to them.”
The association is made up of several clubs around the region, ranging from Colac to Apollo Bay, Bannockburn to Lorne and Modewarre to East Geelong.
“We’ve got a lot of clubs around. There are varied interests from to another,” Hotchin said. “As the association, we’re heavily involved in putting fish in and around Geelong for all the school holidays and then we put fish out at Deakin for the fishing clinic.”
Hotchin said the clinic would give kids a great introduction, and hopefully lure them into joining a club.
“We can be out every weekend but the kids, they don’t usually do much through the summer, it’s more through the colder weather,” he said.
“If you put a rod in a kid’s hand and teach them how to fish, you’ve taken a spray can out of their hand, and if they’re catching fish, they’re helping to feed the family.” The event starts at 9am.
