Ice-addicted mum sped through red light

- OLIVIA SHYING

AN ice-addicted mum who was in the early stages of pregnancy when she ignored a red light and drove across Geelong’s busiest road in an effort to evade police last month is unlikely to spend more time in custody.

Traralgon’s Alycia McCarthy has been in custody since her arrest on September 25.

The court heard earlier this week that McCarthy was driving a blue Commodore on Robin Ave in Norlane with a male in the passenger seat when police attempted to stop her.

She drove through the wrong side of a roundabout, accelerated on Sparks Rd and sped across Melbourne Rd through a red light to Plume St, prompting officers to abandon their pursuit of her car.

McCarthy pleaded guilty to a count of dangerous driving while being pursued by police among numerous charges, including thefts and dishonesty offences. She was on two community corrections orders at the time of her arrest.

Magistrate John Lesser this week opted to divert McCarthy’s sentencing for the new offences and ordered she recommence her two extended CCOs. McCarthy was ordered to complete 110 hours of community service within 12 months.

She was bailed with strict conditions to reappear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing next February.

“If you muck-up you know what will happen,” Mr Lesser said.
