Racial abuse ban call

- STEVE LARKIN A-LEAGUE

BRISBANE goalkeeper Jamie Young says he’s “baffled” at being racially taunted during an A-League game.

Young was called a “monkey” during Saturday’s ALeague fixture against Western Sydney in Mudgee.

“We had a free kick at the time and someone behind the goal ... made a racist remark,” Young said yesterday.

“I was just surprised, the stadium wasn’t very loud at the time, it was just before a play of the game ... everyone could hear, it was baffling to me.

“You cop criticism as a player in general, fans try and put you off your game, that is part of the culture of the sport. But certainly not the remarks I received.”

Western Sydney wants to ban the spectator, who Young said was a male aged “50 to 60 to my eye”.

“I was pretty displeased with the taste of the remarks,” Young said.

“In society these days we have moved on from that sort of thing but unfortunately this happened. It personally didn’t hurt me so much. I just thought it was poor form. A person his age and stature should know better.’’

Young accepted the Wanderers’ apology after the incident at Glen Willow Sports Stadium, where Western Sydney and Brisbane drew 2-2 on Saturday.

PERTH strikers Andy Keogh and Chris Ikonomidis scored in a precious 2-0 away win against Adelaide United last night to give Glory top spot on the A-League ladder.

Both scored tap-ins at Coopers Stadium, extending Perth’s unbeaten start to the season to three wins and a draw. Irishman Keogh helped to deliver the Reds’ first defeat of the season after finding his customary spot: right place, right time.

In the 73rd minute, United goalkeeper Paul Izzo produced a superb diving save to halt a fierce Alex Grant header, only for the rebound to fall to Keogh almost standing on the goal-line.

Keogh duly tapped in for his fourth goal in four games of the campaign. And teammate Ikonomidis iced the win in the 90th minute after a neat combination, slotting into an unmarked goal after rounding Izzo.

Glory takes top billing with 10 points, two ahead of the fellow unbeaten outfit, Sydney FC (two wins, two draws).

Perth largely made the running against Adelaide and could have won by more, with Joel Chianese and Keogh unable to convert early chances.
