Nationalism the enemy, says Macron

Will Smith, Cher, Lady Gaga, Alyssa Milano and Kim Kardashian, used social media to detail the threats their homes faced. The historic Paramount Ranch, where the TV series Westworld and other iconic series and films have been shot since 1927, was destroyed and the Malibu mansion used in The Bachelor and The Bachelorette reality-TV shows has reportedly been damaged.

In Northern California, the death toll of Thursday’s horrific wildfire that swept through the town of Paradise rose to 23 after the discovery of 14 more bodies.

The toll is expected to grow and become the deadliest in California’s history with scores more residents missing.

It is already the most destructive fire in the state’s history, with more than 6400 homes and 260 commercial buildings destroyed in less than 24 hours. FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron has used an Armistice Day speech to urge leaders to reject nationalism, in an apparent dig at US President Donald Trump’s American First strategy.

Mr Trump, who was present when Mr Macron made the comments at a gathering of 72 world leaders in Paris, did not react as the French President said “nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism”.

“By saying ‘our interests first and never mind the others’, you stamp out the most precious thing a nation can have . . . its moral values,” Mr Macron said.

Mr Trump did not respond to the comments when he made an appearance at an American war cemetery outside Paris several hours later.

The apparent sniping from Mr Macron came after the two leaders had a spat over his call for a European army to defend the continent from Russian aggression, which prompted a tweet from Mr Trump saying it was “very insulting’’, pointing out the US propped up NATO.

The pair had apparently made up before yesterday’s appearance but there were no obvious signs of cordiality.
