BUNNINGS HITS A SNAG

PETA urges switch to vegan sausages

- HARRISON TIPPET

AN animal rights group is demanding hardware chain Bunnings dump its beloved community fundraiser sausage sizzles and replace them with a vegan alternative.

US-based group People for r the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote to Bunnings managing director Michael Schneider urging the hardware chain to switch to vegan sausages.

The request came after Bunnings advised community groups conducting sausage sizzle fundraisers to place cooked onions under sausages to prevent slipping hazards from fallen onions.

The directive has caused national outcry for its perceived meddling in an iconic Aussie food item. But PETA has taken it a step further and called for an end to the “Bunnings snag”.

“We have a suggestion that would give your health and safety standards even more sizzle: make the sausages vegan,” the letter from PETA outreach and partnerships liaison Emily Rice said.

“Stray onions on the floor may m cause the occasional slip, but bu it’s the sausage meat that poses po the real danger: the World Health Organization has classified processed meat as a carcinogen in the same category as cigarettes.

“Switching to vegan sausages would not only b benefit your customers’ he health, but also spare the lives of animals in the meat in industry, who are subjected to da daily misery and endure a terrifying and agonising death.

“There are many meat alternatives available to throw on the barbie that have all the flavour of their fleshy counterparts with none of the cholesterol or cruelty to animals”

While Bunnings directive on onions has caused uproar online, the public is unlikely to stomach PETA’s call to dump sausage sizzles.
